A Soft, Woody Incense with a Hint of Pear

Pear Chamber Incense is a refined Chinese blended incense inspired by the fragrance traditions of the Southern Tang court.

Delicate pear gently softens warm sandalwood and deep agarwood, creating a quiet woody aroma with a subtle natural sweetness. Rather than smelling like a modern fruity perfume, the pear sits softly within the woods, adding brightness without becoming overly sweet.

Soft and understated, it is well suited to slow evenings, reading, tea, and quiet moments at home.

HISTORICAL ORIGIN

A Fragrance Preserved in Xiang Sheng

Pear Chamber Incense, known in Chinese as E Li Zhang Zhong Xiang (鹅梨帐中香), belongs to a tradition of chamber fragrances associated with the Southern Tang court.

One of its best-known preparations was later preserved in Xiang Sheng (《香乘》), the Ming-dynasty compendium of incense traditions compiled by Zhou Jiazhou. In this version, agarwood and sandalwood powders are placed inside hollowed fragrant pears, steamed repeatedly, then blended and rested before burning.

The pear is therefore more than a simple fragrance note. It becomes part of the preparation itself, gently softening and rounding the character of the aromatic woods.

Gentle Still takes inspiration from this historical method and its balance of pear, sandalwood, and agarwood, adapting the idea into a natural coreless incense stick for contemporary use.

Our Formula

A Historical Formula, Thoughtfully Adapted

Historical Preparation

Agarwood and sandalwood powders were placed inside hollowed fragrant pears, steamed repeatedly, then blended and rested before burning. The recorded preparation was a compound incense made for burning rather than a stick.

Gentle Still Interpretation

Agarwood · Sandalwood · Pear · Rose Water · Nanmu Powder

Gentle Still preserves the historical relationship between pear and aromatic woods while adapting the blend into a natural coreless incense stick. Rose water echoes another recorded preparation in the same Pear Chamber tradition, while nanmu powder helps give the blend the structure needed for stick form.

How To Use

Burn in a well-ventilated area. Avoid inhaling smoke directly and never leave burning incense unattended.

Extinguish

Gently blow out the flame and allow the incense to smolder.

FAQs

No. Gentle Still incense is made without synthetic fragrance and uses aromatic woods, botanicals, resins, flowers, and natural plant-based binders depending on the formula.

No. Our incense is coreless. The entire stick is formed from the aromatic blend and its natural binder, without a bamboo or charcoal core.

Both sizes use the same incense formula. Mini is shorter and designed for a briefer fragrance experience, making it a good option for smaller spaces or trying a scent for the first time. Standard offers a longer burn and a fuller incense session. Exact dimensions and burn times are listed in the Product Details for each fragrance.

Our incense is sold by net weight, so the number of sticks may vary slightly between batches due to natural differences in stick thickness and weight.

Place the incense securely in a heat-resistant holder on a stable surface. Light the tip until a small flame appears, then gently blow out the flame and allow the stick to smolder.

Burn in a well-ventilated area, avoid inhaling smoke directly, and never leave burning incense unattended.

The aroma may remain softly in the room after the incense has finished burning. How long it lasts depends on room size, ventilation, temperature, and surrounding materials.

Natural incense is intended to unfold gently and fade gradually rather than leave behind a strong, persistent room fragrance.

Store incense in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keeping it in its original packaging or another well-sealed container will help protect its aromatic materials.

Incense produces smoke when burned. Use it only in a well-ventilated area, keep burning incense, holders, and ash out of reach of children and pets, and never leave it unattended. If someone in your household is particularly sensitive to smoke, avoid burning incense around them.
