A Rich, Layered Incense of Warmth and Coolness

Yang Guifei’s Chamber Incense has a deeper, more expressive character, moving between rich woods, dry spice, sweet herbal nuances, and a cool aromatic lift.

Rather than settling into one heavy woody note, the fragrance shifts between warmth and clarity as it burns, creating a layered aroma that feels refined, enveloping, and quietly dramatic.

More present than softer blends such as Pear Chamber, it is especially suited to evenings when fragrance is meant to become part of the atmosphere.

HISTORICAL ORIGIN

A Tang Court Fragrance Preserved in Xiang Sheng

Yang Guifei’s Chamber Incense, known in Chinese as Yang Guifei Wei Zhong Ya Xiang (杨贵妃帏中衙香), is preserved under this name in Xiang Sheng (《香乘》), the Ming-dynasty compendium compiled by Zhou Jiazhou.

The recorded formula combines several aromatic woods with clove, sandalwood, fragrant herbs, prepared aromatic materials, and a small amount of borneol. The ingredients are finely ground, blended with refined honey, and formed before burning.

Its character is built around contrast: deep woods and warm spice are lifted by herbs and the cool clarity of borneol, creating a fragrance that feels both rich and bright.

Because Xiang Sheng was compiled centuries after the Tang dynasty, the association with Yang Guifei is best understood as part of the formula’s received historical tradition rather than proof that she personally created it.

Gentle Still takes inspiration from this warm–cool structure, adapting its layered aromatic character into a contemporary coreless incense stick.

Our Formula

A Historical Formula, Thoughtfully Adapted

Historical Preparation

Agarwood · Zhanxiang · Clove · Sandalwood · Musk · Huoxiang (Agastache rugosa) · Linglingxiang (Lysimachia foenum-graecum) · Jia Xiang · Borneol · Refined Honey

Preserved in Xiang Sheng (《香乘》), the historical formula brings together deep aromatic woods, warm spice, fragrant herbs, prepared Jia Xiang, historical musk, and a small amount of borneol.

The materials were finely ground, blended evenly with refined honey, and rolled into bean-sized pellets before burning. Rich woods and warm aromatics formed the foundation, while herbs and borneol brought a lighter, cooling lift. Together, they created a layered composition shaped by the movement between warmth and clarity.

Gentle Still Interpretation

Agarwood · Sandalwood · Musk · Agastache Rugosa · Lysimachia Foenum-Graecum · Jia Xiang · Borneol · Refined Honey

Gentle Still preserves the historical formula’s warm–cool structure while adapting its materials and form for contemporary use. Agarwood and sandalwood create a deep woody foundation. Agastache Rugosa and Lysimachia Foenum-Graecum introduce gentle herbal nuances, while Musk, Jia Xiang, and refined honey bring roundness and depth. Borneol rises above the warmer base with a clear, cooling lift.

In this interpretation, Jia Xiang remains part of the composition, while Zhanxiang is no longer listed as a separate agarwood grade and Jishexiang is not included. The balance has been carefully adjusted to retain the formula’s layered movement between richness and brightness.

The most visible adaptation is its form: the historical preparation was made as small honey-bound pellets, while Gentle Still shapes the composition into a contemporary coreless incense stick for a simple and consistent daily ritual.

FAQs

No. Gentle Still incense is made without synthetic fragrance and uses aromatic woods, botanicals, resins, flowers, and natural plant-based binders depending on the formula.

No. Our incense is coreless. The entire stick is formed from the aromatic blend and its natural binder, without a bamboo or charcoal core.

Both sizes use the same incense formula. Mini is shorter and designed for a briefer fragrance experience, making it a good option for smaller spaces or trying a scent for the first time. Standard offers a longer burn and a fuller incense session. Exact dimensions and burn times are listed in the Product Details for each fragrance.

Our incense is sold by net weight, so the number of sticks may vary slightly between batches due to natural differences in stick thickness and weight.

Place the incense securely in a heat-resistant holder on a stable surface. Light the tip until a small flame appears, then gently blow out the flame and allow the stick to smolder.

Burn in a well-ventilated area, avoid inhaling smoke directly, and never leave burning incense unattended.

The aroma may remain softly in the room after the incense has finished burning. How long it lasts depends on room size, ventilation, temperature, and surrounding materials.

Natural incense is intended to unfold gently and fade gradually rather than leave behind a strong, persistent room fragrance.

Store incense in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keeping it in its original packaging or another well-sealed container will help protect its aromatic materials.

Incense produces smoke when burned. Use it only in a well-ventilated area, keep burning incense, holders, and ash out of reach of children and pets, and never leave it unattended. If someone in your household is particularly sensitive to smoke, avoid burning incense around them.
