    Historical descriptions associate Jia Xiang with the operculum — the hard closing structure — of certain marine gastropods.

    In traditional incense craftsmanship, natural binders such as nanmu powder, Baiji, and refined honey serve as supporting materials rather than dominant fragrance ingredients.     Refined Honey — Lianmi (炼蜜)

    Refined honey appears repeatedly in historical incense-making.

    It could bind powdered aromatics into a workable mixture while also bringing a subtle softness to the finished material.

    Many recipes follow a familiar sequence:

    the aromatic ingredients are ground,

    mixed with refined honey,

    formed into shape,

    and then allowed to rest or age.

    This last stage matters.

    A traditional incense was not always considered finished the moment its ingredients were mixed.

    Baiji provided another useful binding material.

    For something smoother and warmer, sandalwood-forward blends are often more approachable.

    Natural borneol points toward cooler, clearer compositions, while Gansong, Huoxiang, Lingling Xiang, Baizhi, and other roots and herbs reveal a more earthy and botanical side of He Xiang.

    Flower lovers have more choices than they might expect.

    Osmanthus, jasmine, gardenia, plum blossom, rose, lotus, and other flowers all belong to the historical Chinese fragrance vocabulary, whether used directly or through scent-transfer techniques.

    And some of the most distinctive formulas move beyond conventional perfume ingredients altogether.

    Pear, tea, lychee shell, and other prepared botanical materials reveal a tradition in which familiar substances become unexpectedly aromatic through craftsmanship.

    The most useful question, then, is not:

    “Which ingredient smells best?”

    It is:

    “What happens when these ingredients are brought together?”

    That is where He Xiang begins.
