A Cool, Clear Incense with a Warming Undercurrent

Snow in Spring is built around contrast: cool aromatic clarity appears first, followed by dry woods, gentle spice, and a softer warmth as the fragrance settles.

It is not intended to smell like a literal plum-blossom perfume. Instead, the composition evokes the idea behind its name — cold air, restrained fragrance, and the first suggestion of spring emerging through winter.

Clear and focused in character, it is particularly well suited to quiet daytime rituals.

HISTORICAL ORIGIN

Three Formulas, One Fragrant Idea

Snow in Spring, known in Chinese as Xue Zhong Chun Xin (雪中春信), is preserved in Xiang Sheng (《香乘》), the Ming-dynasty compendium of Chinese incense traditions.

Rather than presenting a single fixed recipe, the text records three markedly different preparations under the same name. Across them, sandalwood is joined in varying combinations by agarwood, clove, camphor, aromatic roots, herbs, spices, charcoal, musk, and honey.

One version is concise and cooling. Another develops into a much more layered composition of woods, roots, and warming spices. A third takes a different direction through aromatic roots and tea-treated sandalwood.

Together, these variations suggest that a historical incense name could preserve an aromatic idea as much as one immutable formula. Snow in Spring evokes a poised contrast: cool clarity at first, followed by dry woods, restrained spice, and the first suggestion of warmth returning through winter.

Gentle Still interprets this contrast through plum blossom, borneol, clove, agarwood, and sandalwood, adapting the idea into a natural coreless incense stick for contemporary use.

Our Formula

A Historical Formula, Thoughtfully Adapted

Across the Recorded Versions

Sandalwood · Agarwood · Clove · Camphor · Aromatic Roots & Spices · Honey

The ingredients varied considerably between the three recorded preparations. They were ground and blended as compound incense rather than formed into sticks. One version was combined with refined honey and shaped into small incense cakes about the size of Chinese chess pieces, or pressed in decorative molds, before burning.

Gentle Still Interpretation

Plum Blossom · Clove · Agarwood · Sandalwood · Borneol · Nanmu Powder

Rather than reproducing one historical version ingredient for ingredient, Gentle Still preserves their characteristic interplay of cooling aromatics, dry woods, and warming spice.

Plum blossom is an interpretive expression of the name and its wintry imagery, rather than an ingredient listed in the three recorded formulas. Borneol brings cool aromatic clarity, while nanmu powder gives the blend the structure needed for a natural coreless incense stick.

FAQs

No. Gentle Still incense is made without synthetic fragrance and uses aromatic woods, botanicals, resins, flowers, and natural plant-based binders depending on the formula.

No. Our incense is coreless. The entire stick is formed from the aromatic blend and its natural binder, without a bamboo or charcoal core.

Both sizes use the same incense formula. Mini is shorter and designed for a briefer fragrance experience, making it a good option for smaller spaces or trying a scent for the first time. Standard offers a longer burn and a fuller incense session. Exact dimensions and burn times are listed in the Product Details for each fragrance.

Our incense is sold by net weight, so the number of sticks may vary slightly between batches due to natural differences in stick thickness and weight.

Place the incense securely in a heat-resistant holder on a stable surface. Light the tip until a small flame appears, then gently blow out the flame and allow the stick to smolder.

Burn in a well-ventilated area, avoid inhaling smoke directly, and never leave burning incense unattended.

The aroma may remain softly in the room after the incense has finished burning. How long it lasts depends on room size, ventilation, temperature, and surrounding materials.

Natural incense is intended to unfold gently and fade gradually rather than leave behind a strong, persistent room fragrance.

Store incense in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keeping it in its original packaging or another well-sealed container will help protect its aromatic materials.

Incense produces smoke when burned. Use it only in a well-ventilated area, keep burning incense, holders, and ash out of reach of children and pets, and never leave it unattended. If someone in your household is particularly sensitive to smoke, avoid burning incense around them.
