It appears in several classical Chinese incense texts, most notably the Xiang Sheng (《香乘》), a Ming Dynasty encyclopedia that preserves four versions of the “Southern Tang Emperor Li‘s Bedchamber Incense.” Among them, the most celebrated calls for just three ingredients: agarwood, sandalwood, and the juice of the fragrant goose pear — steamed and aged until the fruit’s sweetness gently infuses the wood.
