A Quiet, Polished Incense with Resinous Depth

Madam Huarui’s Private Incense is restrained rather than grand. Refined woody notes form its foundation, while dry resinous nuances add definition and a cool aromatic lift keeps the fragrance clear and composed.

The result is intimate, smooth, and quietly persistent rather than sweet or overtly floral — a fragrance that reveals itself gradually without dominating the room.

Its understated character makes it particularly suited to smaller, private spaces and slower moments at home.

HISTORICAL ORIGIN

A Private Court Fragrance Preserved in Xiang Sheng

Madam Huarui’s Private Incense, known in Chinese as Huarui Furen Ya Xiang (花蕊夫人衙香), is preserved in Xiang Sheng under a name associated with Madam Huarui, the poet and consort of the Later Shu court.

The historical formula brings together agarwood, zhanxiang, sandalwood, frankincense, borneol, and other aromatic materials. After preparation, the blend is combined with honey, gently heated, rested for several days, and formed before burning.

Unlike a fragrance built around one dominant note, its character comes from the relationship between its materials: polished woods give structure, frankincense adds dry resinous brightness, and borneol introduces a cool aromatic lift.

As with many famous historical incense names, the surviving source does not allow us to verify that Madam Huarui personally composed the formula. Gentle Still therefore approaches it as a preserved fragrance tradition, thoughtfully adapted for contemporary use.

Our Formula

A Historical Formula, Thoughtfully Adapted

Historical Inspiration

Agarwood · Zhanxiang (a traditional grade of agarwood) · Sandalwood · Frankincense · Borneol · Jia Xiang · Musk

Recorded Historical Form

In the formula preserved in Xiang Sheng, the aromatic materials were blended with raw honey, gently heated, rested for seven days, and shaped into small incense cakes for burning. The historical preparation was not made in stick form.

Gentle Still Interpretation

Agarwood · Sandalwood · Frankincense · Borneol · Jia Xiang · Musk · Nanmu Powder

Gentle Still retains the formula’s defining relationship between polished woods, dry frankincense, and cooling borneol. To make the fragrance more suitable for contemporary daily use, we have adapted the historical incense-cake preparation into a coreless stick, using nanmu powder as a natural binder.

This considered change updates the physical form and burning method while preserving the restrained, resinous, and quietly cooling character at the heart of the historical formula.

FAQs

No. Gentle Still incense is made without synthetic fragrance and uses aromatic woods, botanicals, resins, flowers, and natural plant-based binders depending on the formula.

No. Our incense is coreless. The entire stick is formed from the aromatic blend and its natural binder, without a bamboo or charcoal core.

Both sizes use the same incense formula. Mini is shorter and designed for a briefer fragrance experience, making it a good option for smaller spaces or trying a scent for the first time. Standard offers a longer burn and a fuller incense session. Exact dimensions and burn times are listed in the Product Details for each fragrance.

Our incense is sold by net weight, so the number of sticks may vary slightly between batches due to natural differences in stick thickness and weight.

Place the incense securely in a heat-resistant holder on a stable surface. Light the tip until a small flame appears, then gently blow out the flame and allow the stick to smolder.

Burn in a well-ventilated area, avoid inhaling smoke directly, and never leave burning incense unattended.

The aroma may remain softly in the room after the incense has finished burning. How long it lasts depends on room size, ventilation, temperature, and surrounding materials.

Natural incense is intended to unfold gently and fade gradually rather than leave behind a strong, persistent room fragrance.

Store incense in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keeping it in its original packaging or another well-sealed container will help protect its aromatic materials.

Incense produces smoke when burned. Use it only in a well-ventilated area, keep burning incense, holders, and ash out of reach of children and pets, and never leave it unattended. If someone in your household is particularly sensitive to smoke, avoid burning incense around them.
